Throwing a Block Party in the Neighborhood

By September 4, 2012April 14th, 2022No Comments

Although school has started again, you can still celebrate the warm weather that has stayed behind! A new season brings about changes, but getting together with old friends and neighbors is a great way to catch up on what’s happened. So why not plan a block party? This event takes lots of preparation, but the end result will be that of fun, celebration, food, laughter, and memories.

The first step to take is to see whether anyone else in the neighborhood thinks a block party is a good idea. This could be done by going door to door or starting a neighborhood e-mail discussion group. Having help on such a project will save you lots of stress once the day of the event grows closer. Next, form a planning committee to organize the different responsibilities, which can include collecting money, arranging party rentals, and figuring out what each household can contribute. It is a good idea to leave at least four weeks between planning and the actual day. If you want the streets to be blocked off, you may have to submit an application to the local police. Check with your county for the rules in your area.

As the block party comes together, sending out mailbox fliers is a good way to alert people about planning meetings and when the official date and rain date will be. You could distribute the invites to residents of the party about two weeks out. An e-mail discussion group is a useful tool for coordinating food and drinks, among other things. Next, secure volunteers for setup, supervision, and cleanup. The more equipment you have, the more adults you need to operate it. If this will be an all-day party, organize volunteers in shifts. Finally, plan the entertainment that will appeal to all ages. This can include face painting, a moon bounce, a cotton candy machine, a bon fire, and some good music to dance the night away!

At Ron Jackson Insurance Agency, we encourage residents to make sure their party follows the regulations of the town so no one gets hurt. It is important to keep safety in mind when planning such an event because your goal is to promote fun, not accidents and injuries. Bringing the neighborhood together for a special occasion like a block party is a great way to welcome the school year and enjoy the company of those you love.
