Happy Hump Day, Because T G I Wednesday’s Just Doesn’t Sound Right….

It’s Wednesday, or as a vast majority of the population likes to call it “Hump Day”.  Some people have a strong aversion to this term. I say lighten up!  Our insurance competitor has a pretty funny Hump Day commercial with a talking camel. If you want a laugh check it out, as long as you call us for your insurance needs!

The question of the hour is when did HUMP DAY become a “thing”?  When did it originate? Being the Googler that I am, I decided to do some research.

According to various websites, Hump Day is said to have originated sometime between the early 1900’s and the 1970’s, but the year it was coined is hard to trace. There is some dispute about whether Wednesday is truly “hump day.” When the expression emerged, many people worked a six-day week, and had only Sunday as a day of rest. Some people suggest that in this context, Thursday would have actually been the “hump day.

Urbandictionary.com says that Hump Day is “The middle of a work week (Wednesday); used in the context of climbing a proverbial hill to get through a tough week. After hump day, the weekend gets closer.” Not quite the definition I thought I would be given, being that urbandictionary.com is usually pretty entertaining.

Why does our culture find Wednesdays to be so fascinating? As a working woman myself,  it’s the middle of the week that identifies that there are only two days left in the work week.  Though I LOVE my job, bosses and coworkers, I like knowing that the following days are one step closer to the second best day of the week; Friday. Someone who stays at home with their children may look forward to the weekend, when their spouse is home to relieve some them of the household/child care duties.

While our society strongly emphasises how great  Wednesdays and Fridays are, I have to say that Saturdays have to be my favorite day of the week. Not only for the fact that it’s my day off,  but because it’s a day to relax, catch up on movies , TV & college football, spend more time with family and friends, do some errands and shopping, and most importantly sleep in a little later!
