Back to School!

By September 6, 2013April 14th, 2022No Comments

This week marks the start of a new school year. Parents rushing around for school supplies & new clothes, homework starts yet again, high school football is back in full swing, and Starbucks brings back the Pumpkin Spice Latte (Ok, so that may have nothing to do with school, but don’t you look forward to that too?)! Kids are back in their routines, and parents take comfort in knowing that a little more structure has been added back into their lives….

While some families look forward to the Fall/back to school season, it can be financially draining to purchase that expensive, fancy T series calculator, new backpacks, clothes, shoes, and school supplies.  Not to mention school lunches, immunizations, sports, drivers education, extra curricular activities, and tutors. But don’t fret, there are programs offered to those who need them. Here are some helpful tips to help both you and your children during the very busy first week back to school.

Low on Cash

Did you know there are programs to help with the expense of going back to school, such as low cost breakfast and lunches? If you’re struggling,  find out if you and your family qualify for any of the Child Nutrition Programs http://www.fns.usda.gov/child-nutrition-programs

In need of medical insurance, but can’t afford it? See if you qualify for Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) http://www.insurekidsnow.gov/chip/index.html

Shots

Most school systems require their students to stay up to date on immunizations and want proof of this.  Check with your local health clinic to see if they offer free immunizations.

Does your child play a sport? You will likely need to obtain a sports physical. This can cost more than your average co-pay, so be sure to ask your doctor’s office before the appointment.

Homework Help

Homework; It’s like eating broccoli. Kids might not like it, but it’s so good for them! Make sure you carve out some quiet time at home for your children to do their homework. If your children turn to you for help, but you are at a loss, visit http://www2.ed.gov/parents/academic/help/homework/index.html

Your children’s school may offer after school peer to peer tutoring, help from their teacher or other programs in a reading and writing center, for those who need it. Preparing your child for college? Sign them up for an ACT or SAT prep class. This will help them prepare for the grueling test they’re about to take on!

Eat Right & Exercise

In this very fast paced society we often turn to the drive thru for dinner. While the Golden Arches  may offer healthy options with their “Happy Meals”, it’s often up to the parent to make the right decision for their child. It’s proven that children who eat healthy, well balanced breakfasts and lunches are better able to pay attention through their school day, even earning higher grades, than those with an unhealthy diet.

Send a balanced lunch to school with your children. If they prefer to buy their lunch, most schools offer parent monitoring, to see what food choices their children are making. Set up some guidelines for your children. Let them know that a bag of chips and a soda is an unacceptable lunch. A well rounded meal, such as a turkey sandwich with lettuce and tomato, with some fruit or veggies on the side AND a small bag of chips or pretzels is much healthier for them.

Does your child beg you to skip gym class? Be their positive example; take a bike ride, go for a walk, play basketball with them, and enjoy outdoor activities while the gorgeous Fall weather is upon us. Bottom line- show your children how much fun exercising can be!
